 WELCOME to the website of Downey Memorial Christian Church and thank you for the opportunity to introduce ourselves!
We think three words offer a pretty good snapshot of who we are. First, we are an OPEN church. We welcome all kinds of people and entertain all manner of ideas. We have no creed or other test as a basis for membership. Rather, at the heart of our fellowship is a shared commitment to Jesus the Christ as a way of life.
Second, we are a DISCERNING church. We live in transitional times and faithfulness takes many forms. As others have noted, God's purpose is unchanging, but God's strategy can vary infinitely. We hold the Bible in one hand and a newspaper in the other and look to God's Spirit to shape our calling in the same way that the potter shapes the clay.
Third, we are a PROGRESSIVE church. The Disciples of Christ movement does focus on the biblical drama, but we are open to the truth that emerges from other disciplines as well, and we embrace a holistic witness to God's love. This latter recognizes a saving grace that touches human beings, communities, and the whole of creation and includes an underlying commitment to issues of peace and justice.
